Successful Article Marketing: Researching Your Subject and Keywords   by Russ Schmidt

In this next installment of my Successful Article Marketing series, I want to take a step back and go a little bit deeper into the process of choosing your topic and how you can find topics to write about.

As I stated in my last article, you want to keep the topic and keywords you are going to be using in line with the network or business that you are involved in. For example, if you are involved in Magnetic Sponsoring, you may want to write an article around this business.

Now, a technique that you will want to consider is to write an article based on the keyword phrases, Magnetic Sponsoring scam, review, or complaints, because many who are interested in the system will do a search revolving around these keywords.

If you write an article based on the keyword phrase, "Magnetic Sponsoring scam," you will write about the positives of the system and conclude the article that it is not a scam. Than you will try and recruit the reader to seek more information by clicking on your link to either your website or your capture page for your leads in that system.

You can do the same thing for the keyword phrase, "Magnetic Sponsoring review" or any other keyword phrase you come up with. It can be basically the same article, only based on this keyword. Now, be sure not to leave the article exactly the same. You will need to re-write it, rearranging the wording to be sure that the search engines do not deem it as mirroring and not index it.

To find more keyword ideas, you can go to Google and search for Adwords Keyword Tool. There you can search the keyword "Magnetic Sponsoring" and get that keywords results and other keyword suggestions regarding that keyword or keyword phrase.

The keyword tool will give you good quality information; for example, it will give you average statistics of how many times per month the keyword is searched for both local in the country in which you live, and also a global average total.

For the keyword phrase we are using here, "Magnetic Sponsoring," the Adwords Tool tells us that it receives an average of 8,100 searches per month globally, and 3,600 searches in the U.S.A. It also gives us a rating bar telling us the competition for this keyword. The higher the competition, the harder it will be to compete for the coveted top spots using that particular keyword.

If you sign up with Google Adwords, you will also get a cost-per-click (CPC) amount for each keyword it gives you. This also indicates competition as the CPC is bid on by advertisers. The higher the bid, the higher the ad will land in the search results for the advertiser.

Even if you do not have any intention of using Google Adwords advertising, it may be worth it to you to sign up to get these CPC values. It's a free signup, so it cost you nothing. However, you get more information on you particular keyword searches. The more information you have, the better you will be able to qualify your keywords.

Another tool you will want to use in researching your keywords is the Alexa Toolbar Ranking. If you go to Alexa.com, you can click on the download toolbar, and within minutes you will have the toolbar. On the toolbar it will give you a number ranking for every site you go to. If a site that you are using as a keyword gets a very high ranking, it is another sign that the site will have high competition.

As a rule of thumb, any sight under 50,000 ranking will probably have very high competition in all the different keyword options I've explained above. In that case you may want to try and find something else to write about because your attempts at getting to the top of the rankings may prove futile.

I know I just broke one of my own rules about positive thinking, but sometimes it's better to seek a keyword route that will prove easier to get leads quicker, because that's what it's all about, especially if you are just starting out and need leads fast.

A good rule of thumb for sites to write about based on the Alexa rankings, is to write about sites the rank between 50,000 to 200,000. 200,000 sounds like a low ranking, but when you consider that there are over 200 million websites, than ranking 200,000 puts that website in the top one tenth of one percent of all websites. That's a pretty good ranking.
