How To Use The Google External Keyword Tool by Brian
If you are not already acquainted with Google's External Keyword Tool, you should seriously consider learning how to use this effective keyword research tool.
Free to use, the keyword tool is a portion of Google AdWords and is employed to gather details about keywords such as recommendations for new keywords based on a given keyword, search quantity, and data specific to people wanting to use AdWords for PPC advertising. If your not expecting to use AdWords, you can nonetheless get a great advantage from using this software.
If you don't currently hold an account with Google, you will want to sign up for one. It is free, and in the end makes organizing your information with Google easier. You can also obtain more data from the keyword tool when you are signed in.
When you first enter the Google keyword tool, you will see two main text boxes towards the top center of the screen. One to provide keywords and another to provide site addresses.
Let's start out by entering a single keyword. If you were building a web page regarding "Baby Toys", you would simply enter in this phrase and request more keyword ideas by clicking the search button. The research tool will provide you with suggested keyword variations that are closely related to the keyword you entered in. These suggestions are based on actualphrases that visitors are querying with frequency on Google. You can easily use this to figure out the kind of search volume each of the keywords is getting.
When looking at the grid of results, the local volume is based on the advanced settings for your search, and can be altered at any time. For instance, it may be constrained to people in the United States whose primary language is English. The global volume is essentially all searches that came through Google for the phrase.
Even though there are many different functions of Google's search tool, one of the most critical to understand is the "Match Types" that can be located on the left hand side of the screen. Oddly though, this option panel does not show up until after you have run a search (at least at the time of this writing). By default, "Broad" is selected. It is strongly recommended that you use "Exact" match. When you use "Exact" match, the search volume displayed is for visitors that entered in the exact phrase whereas "Broad" matches can bleed into other search terms that are comparable. For instance, "Table Lamps", might include search volume from people searching for "Blue Table Lamps". This can make it difficult to accurately determine how well a keyword is actually performing.
As noted above, you can also type in a website address to get keyword ideas. This is really great if you aren't sure where to begin, but know of a site that is similar to what your looking to do. The keyword tool will give you a list of keywords based on what it has indexed for the website you enter.
However you want to build your list of keywords, you should pay attention to the different variations of keywords that are suggested. When you see keywords that are on topic for your site, you should do another search on that keyword to continue mining information about that more specific keyword phrase. In this fashion, you can begin to build a massive list of keywords that people are actually searching for.
